Why does my Raptor ‘bottom out' when I hit big bumps or dips?

Ever since the introduction of the first-generation Ford F-150 Raptor, interest in this first-ever performance pickup has grown. Its ‘badass’ image has been tested in the extreme desert conditions of Dubai.

The Ford Raptor is a name used by Ford Motor Company in reference to its "high-performance" pickup trucks and SUVs. Ever since 2010, the Raptor is designated as the highest-performance version of the F-150, Ranger, and Bronco.

Ford’s Ranger Raptor was introduced in 2019 to be sold outside of North America while the Bronco Raptor was released in late 2021. The F-150 Raptor – currently in its third generation – has been optimized for better off-road use.

The first two generations of the F-150 Raptor used a leaf-spring suspension. The 3rd Gen F-150 Raptor comes equipped with a 5-link coil spring rear suspension that is designed to smooth out the ride.

Either way, the F-150 Raptor is prone to bottom out if driven at high speeds off-road.

Why don't my factory bump stops prevent bottoming out?

FYI - Factory bump stops were never designed to prevent bottoming out!

The main purpose of a bump stop is to serve as a final cushion when the suspension bottoms out. That way, there’s always a bit of protection to prevent metal from hitting metal or, in some cases, prevent the frame from traveling too far.

When the bump stops make contact with the axle (or, in some cases, the frame) the suspension has bottomed out and can go no further.

Off-road bump stops take it one step further by helping to maintain better ride quality on rough terrain, giving the driver more control over the vehicle. Nitrogen bump stops and Active Off-Road Bumpstops are both designed to absorb the constant stress of bottoming out by allowing a better cushion between the frame and axle.

What's the best solution to prevent the painful jarring each time my Raptor bottoms out?

If you've gone off-road and your Raptor is still equipped with original bump stops from the factory, it can sound like a loud, cringe-worthy ‘clunk’ when your suspension bottoms out.

There are basically three types of bump stops designed to replace the bump stops that were installed at the factory. All three minimize the damage caused when the suspension bottoms out:

  1. Hydraulic bump stops
  2. Speed Bump bump stops
  3. Timbren Active Off-Road Bumpstops

If price is no object, hydraulic bump stops are a viable alternative. These adjustable stops are filled with shock oil and nitrogen. You’ll need a custom shop specializing in made-to-measure installation because these bump stops work best in conjunction with your existing shocks.

If price is an issue, Active Off-Road Bumpstops are the way to go. They’re made of natural rubber and come in many shapes and sizes. Depending on what you drive, there is a custom kit that will fit your Raptor. If you can remove a factory bump stop, you can install a set of easy-to-install Active Off-Road Bumpstops.
