THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS INDICATE THAT I NEED ABOUT A 1″GAP. I’M ALMOST TOUCHING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
You’re right.
We recommend that the Aeon® hollow rubber spring should not engage with the axle on an unloaded vehicle.
Here’s the reason:
First of all, the required gap – approximately 1 inch* – between rubber spring and axle helps maintain your unloaded ride quality.
But before you do anything, you need to determine if you actually have a problem.
Here’s a short checklist to follow:
- Make sure you’re installing a rear kit. (Front kits don’t require any gap.)
- Check to see if the vehicle is loaded. (Loaded vehicles ride on the rubber spring at all times.)
- Do you have a partial load (like a truck cap)? Quite often, 200 lbs. is enough to drop the back end and cause the rubber spring to engage with the axle.
- Does the kit include a spacer? (It looks like a hockey puck.) Spacers are optional, designed to help you adjust the overall ride height. If you don’t have enough gap, remove the spacer.
- Is your truck an older model (10+ years)? Your suspension may have relaxed (sagged) over the years. If so, check to see if the suspension can be adjusted to gain more height.
- Keep this in mind: Not everyone needs a gap to maintain acceptable ride quality. In fact, it’s to your advantage that the rubber spring sit on the axle at all times – even without a load.
